Seguin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a three-run, ninth-inning rally and an outstanding pitching performance from
Cameron Graham to post a 3-2 victory over Texas Lutheran University Friday afternoon in Seguin. The Cru improves to 10-12 overall and 2-5 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the victory. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 15-10 overall and 5-2 in the ASC West on the season.
The game would be a pitcher's duel between UMHB's Graham and TLU's Brad Orosey through the first eight innings. TLU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Issac Tijerina's RBI single. It would stay that way until Cody Miller pushed it to 2-0 with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth for the Bulldogs. Orosey would take a three-hitter into the ninth-inning and UMHB would not get a base runner beyond first base through the first eight frames.
Zach Young led off the top of the ninth with a single and moved to third on
Seth Mogavero's double. After a groundout,
Josh Fredrick ripped a two-run double to tie the game at two and Fredrick scored the go-ahead run on
Chris Joshlin's single. TLU would get a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but Graham coaxed pinch-hitter Zach Skarbic to hit into a double-play to end the game and cap the UMHB comeback.
Graham went the distance, scattering eight hits and striking out two to even his record at 2-2 on the year. Graham allowed two earned runs and walked two. Orosey took the loss for the Bulldogs to drop to 0-1 on the year. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out 10 in eight and a third innings. Mogavero and
Logan Pratt had two hits apiece for UMHB in the win. Miller, Tijerina and Royce Rodriguez had two hits each for TLU.
The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Seguin. The Cru will then travel to Sherman for a 3:00 PM non-conference doubleheader at Austin College next Tuesday, March 29th.
