Baseball falls to Schreiner 15-4

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead but never recovered from Schreiner's six-run fourth inning as the Cru dropped a 15-4 decision to the Mountaineers Friday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 11-14 overall and 3-7 in American Southwest Conference play. Schreiner improves to 7-18 overall and 4-6 in the ASC with the victory.
                            
UMHB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Josh Fredrick's two-run single. The Mountaineers tied the game with two runs in the top of the third and broke it open with six more in the top of the fourth. Five different players drove in runs for Schreiner and Chase Valdez had a two-run single for the biggest hit in the inning. The Mountaineers added four more in the fifth and two in the sixth to stretch the lead to 14-2. Schreiner would score one more in the top of the ninth before Ricky Brenek hit a two-run single for UMHB in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to the final margin.
 
Brenek was 3-4 for the Cru with two RBI. Zach Young also had three hits for UMHB. Valdez and Marcus Myhaver had four hits apiece for the Mountaineers and Myhaver also drove in four runs. Chris Whitehead and Brett Keckler added three hits apiece in Schreiner's 21-hit attack. Cameron Graham took the loss for the Cru to drop to 2-3 on the season. Matt Valley tossed a complete-game, nine-hitter for Schreiner to raise his record to 3-4 on the year.
 
The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. The Cru will then travel to Austin next weekend for a three-game ASC West Division series at Concordia Texas.
