Softball sweeps HSU and wins ASC West Division title

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a two-run fifth inning to take the lead in game two and the Cru went on to complete a doubleheader sweep of Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB took game one 3-0 and then battled back for a 10-8 win in game two to close out a four-game sweep of the Cowgirls. The Cru improves to 26-10 overall and 19-1 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the sweep. UMHB also clinches a second straight ASC West Division title with Saturday's sweep. Hardin-Simmons falls to 19-17 overall and 13-7 in the ASC West Division with the two losses.
 
The Cru used a two-run third inning to open up a scoreless game in the opener and then made it stand up in a 3-0 victory. Caitlin Wells drove in the first run with a double and then stole third and scored on a throwing error. Hannah White's solo home run in the fourth made it 3-0 Cru and that was more than enough for UMHB pitcher Erica White. Erica White scattered four hits in a complete-game shutout and raised her record to 14-1. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. Megann Lewis took the loss to fall to 10-8 for HSU. Wells and Hannah White had two hits apiece for UMHB. Kelsey Evans had two of HSU's four hits.
 
The Cru then fought back from a second-inning deficit to take a 10-8 decision in game two. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, UMHB used Caitlin Bollier's RBI double and Megan Bohne's two-run homer to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. HSU put five on the board in the top of the second to take a 6-3 lead. Evans and Taylor Namey both had two-run singles in the frame for the Cowgirls. UMHB close to 6-5 on Chandler Henson's two-run homer in the bottom of the second and used Jordan Giesen's RBI single and Henson's RBI double to take a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the third. HSU retook the lead on Mackenzie Clay's two-run single in the fourth. UMHB then tied the game on Hannah White's RBI single in the fourth. Wells and Bollier then hit infield RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to give the Cru a 10-8 edge and Erica White made it stand up to move her record to 15-1. Leslie Henderson took the loss for HSU. Wells had three hits for the Cru and Bollier, Hannah White, Bohne and Henson all added two hits apiece. Namey had three hits for Hardin-Simmons.
 
The Cru will close out the regular season with a four-game series against Concordia Texas next week. The two teams will open the series with a 5:00 PM doubleheader next Thursday in Round Rock before closing out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader next Friday in Belton. UMHB will then be the #1 seed from the ASC West in the ASC Championship Tournament in Lewisville April 28th through May 1st.
