Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team saw a late lead slip away before coming up with some ninth-inning magic and the Cru held on in game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB won game one 9-4 before posting a 4-3 victory in game two to improve to 13-14 overall and 5-7 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The Mountaineers fall to 7-20 overall and 4-8 in the ASC West Division with the two losses.
UMHB saw a 3-0 lead disappear in the top of the ninth inning of game two, but found an answer in the bottom of the inning to post a 4-3 victory. The Cru took a 2-0 lead on
Chris Joshlin's two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and stretched it to 3-0 on
Braden Embry's RBI single in the bottom of the third. It would stay that way into the ninth inning before the Mountaineers rallied to tie the game. Brett Keckler's RBI double cut it to 3-1 and Justin Martinez scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-2 game. Jesse Paredes drove in the tying run with a one-out single, but
Sam VanHoozer used a strikeout and pick-off to end the threat with the game tied at three. After a leadoff groundout in the bottom of the ninth,
Zach Young drew a walk on a 3-2 count.
Josh Fredrick then singled down the line with Young advancing to third. Joshlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Embry followed with a single through the drawn-in infield to score Young for a 4-3 Cru victory. VanHoozer picked up the win to even his record at 1-1.
Cameron Arnett scattered six hits and allowed two runs over eight-plus innings of work for UMHB. He struck out six and walked just one. Daniel Brewer took the loss for Schreiner after giving up 12 hits and four runs in eight and a third innings of work. Joshlin was 4-4 for UMHB and Embry and Fredrick added two hits apiece.
The Cru built an early lead and then held off another late Schreiner rally in a 9-4 game one win. Embry scored the game's first run on a balk in the bottom of the fourth and
Reinaldo Araujo added an RBI single to make it 2-0 UMHB. Young scored on a wild pitch and
Seth Lynn added a two-run single as the Cru pushed the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Schreiner scored a single run in the top of the sixth before UMHB answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Fredrick blasted a three-run homer and Lynn added a sacrifice fly to make it 9-1. The Mountaineers would score runs on an error, a bases loaded walk and a groundout to pull to within 9-4 in the top of the seventh, but that's as close as Schreiner could get.
Chance Ryan earned the win for the Cru to raise his record to 5-3. Ethan Catalani took the loss for Schreiner to fall to 0-2. Lynn was 3-3 for the Cru and Young added two hits for UMHB.
The Cru will return to action with a three-game, ASC West Division series at Concordia Texas next weekend in Austin. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
