Austin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome early deficits in either game and the Cru dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Austin. UMHB fell 7-5 in game one and dropped a 9-2 decision in game two. The Cru falls to 14-17 overall and 5-10 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the two losses. The Tornados improve to 19-12 overall and 11-4 in the ASC West Division with the two victories.
The Cru rallied late, but the comeback fell just short in a 7-5 loss in game one. Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and stretched it to 3-0 with two more in the bottom of the third.
Reinaldo Araujo's RBI single cut it to 3-1 in the top of the fourth, but the Cru left the bases loaded without scoring another run in that frame. Concordia added two in the bottom of the fourth on Bucky Bryant's RBI single and a run-scoring error. UMHB would use
Chris Joshlin's RBI groundout to cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Tornados once again answered with two more runs in the bottom of that inning. The Cru would then score three in the top of the seventh.
Braden Embry doubled home two runs and scored on Araujo's RBI single. The Cru would bring the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat. Araujo and Embry had two hits and two RBI apiece for the Cru and
Zach Young also chipped in with two hits.
Cameron Graham took the loss for UMHB to fall to 2-4 on the season.
UMHB never recovered from Concordia's four-run fourth inning in a 9-2 game two loss. Kyle Bieschke's three-run homer was the biggest hit as the Tornados took a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Concordia added three more in the fifth before
Josh Fredrick led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to get the Cru on the scoreboard. CTX added two more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-1 lead.
Seth Lynn's RBI single in the top of the ninth pulled UMHB to within 9-2, but that's as close as the Cru would get. Lynn and Young had two hits apiece for the Cru.
Cameron Arnett took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season for UMHB.
The Cru will play a pair of non-conference road games next week before returning to ASC West Division action. UMHB will take on Arlington Baptist on Tuesday in Arlington at 2:00 PM before facing U.T.-Arlington in a 4:00 PM start on Wednesday in Arlington. The Cru will then return home to host Howard Payne University for a three-game ASC West Division series next weekend at Red Murff Field.
