Seguin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team came up with just enough offense to win game one but could not push across enough runs in game two as the Cru split a doubleheader with Texas Lutheran Monday afternoon in Seguin. UMHB won the opener 2-1 before dropping a 4-1 decision in game two. The Cru is now 10-7 overall and 1-2 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The Bulldogs are now 10-6 overall and 2-1 in the ASC West on the year.
UMHB used timely hitting and a dominating pitching performance to win game one 2-1. The Cru grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Chris Florack led off with a single and then came around to score on three straight wild pitches. It would stay that way into the bottom of the fifth before Evan Curtis singled home the tying run. UMHB would take a 2-1 lead when Florack's RBI groundout scored
Seth Lynn in the top of the seventh. Jaime Theriot came on to set down TLU in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win for his first save of the season.
Chance Ryan earned the win to move to 3-0 with six innings of six-hit pitching.
Chris Joshlin had two of the Cru's six hits in the win.
The Cru could not overcome a four-run fourth inning in a 4-1 game two loss. The Bulldogs pushed across four runs in the fourth with Christian DeBlanc's two-run single delivering the biggest blow. TLU starter Kellen McGriff took a no-hitter into the seventh before Joshlin doubled for the Cru's first hit of the game. UMHB scored its only run of the game when
Zach Young scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning, but that's as close as the Cru would get.
Cameron Arnett (2-1) took the loss after scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run in eight innings of work. UMHB managed just four hits in the loss.
UMHB will now return home to host U.T.-Tyler for a 3:00 PM non-conference game tomorrow at Red Murff Field. The Cru will continue its home stand with a three-game West Division series against Howard Payne University this weekend.
