Belton, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome a pair of late three-run innings as the Cru fell to Howard Payne University 8-1 Friday in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the ASC West with the victory.
The Cru grabbed a 1-0 lead when
Zach Crosswhite walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but UMHB left the bases loaded after a strikeout and pop-out. Howard Payne would tie the game in the top of the fifth on Kris Kloc's solo homer and then took a 2-1 lead when Jordan Hammontree walked with the bases loaded walk, but UMHB limited the damage by working out of a bases loaded jam. The Yellow Jackets broke the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh, with Hammontree's two-run double being the biggest hit. Howard Payne added three more in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Taylor Burrow took the loss for the Cru to fall to 1-5 despite taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He scattered five hits, struck out five and walked four in six innings of work. Corey Howie earned the win for Howard Payne to move to 1-2 and Carlton Brown notched the save with three innings of scoreless relief.
Zach Young had three hits for UMHB and
Chris Florack added two more. Three different players had two hits apiece for HPU and Hammontree drove in three runs in the game.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. UMHB will then play a three-game ASC West Division series at Hardin-Simmons next weekend in Abilene.
