Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team erupted for an 11-run first inning in game two and the Cru held on for a 15-3 victory to salvage a doubleheader split with Howard Payne University Saturday in Belton. UMHB surrendered a 10-run sixth inning and suffered a 10-8 loss in game one. The Cru is now 11-10 overall and 2-4 in American Southwest Conference West Division play following the split. Howard Payne moves to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in the ASC West on the season.

UMHB exploded for 11 runs in bottom of the first of game two and then cruised to a 15-3 win in a game shortened by the run rule. The Cru's first eight hitters reached safely and Josh Fredrick and Chris Florack both blasted three-run homers in the inning. Fredrick answered a Howard Payne run with a solo homer in the bottom of the second to make it 12-1. The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of unearned runs in the third to close the gap to 12-3, but UMHB pushed across three more in the bottom of the sixth. Florack's sacrifice fly plated the first run and Fredrick doubled home a run and scored on Seth Lynn's RBI single. Cameron Arnett tossed a complete-game, six-hitter to improve to 3-1. He struck out six and did not allow an earned run. Fredrick was 3-3 with five RBI and Florack also drove in five runs for UMHB in the victory.

The Cru jumped out to an 8-0 lead only to see it disappear in Howard Payne's 10-run sixth inning in a 10-8 game one defeat. UMHB scored two runs on an error to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third and pushed it to 4-0 on Chris Joshlin's two-run homer in the fourth. Dylan Tepoel's two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth to give the Cru an 8-0 lead. Then the wheels fell off in the top of the sixth. Carlton Brown blasted a two-run homer to open the scoring, four bases loaded walks and an RBI single cut the lead to 8-7 and Colton Buzzard gave HPU the lead with a two-run single. Jake Sadler added an RBI single for an insurance run and the Cru could not recover. Jaime Theriot took the loss for UMHB to drop to 2-1. Joshlin had four hits for the Cru and Zach Young, Braden Embry and Tepoel added two hits apiece. UMHB pitchers walked nine in the loss.

UMHB will return to action with a three-game series at Hardin-Simmons next weekend in Abilene. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
