Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team jumped out to an early lead and then cruised to a 13-4 victory over Hardin-Simmons University Friday night in Abilene. The Cru improves to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the victory. The loss drops the Cowboys to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the ASC West on the season.
UMHB took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by
Chris Florack and
Josh Fredrick and
Braden Embry's steal of home on the front end of a double steal. HSU scored one in the bottom of the second before the Cru erupted for five runs in the top of the third inning.
Seth Lynn and Dylan Tepoel singled home runs, Tepoel scored on a wild pitch and Embry added a two-run homer. Embry added an RBI triple in the fourth before the Cowboys cut it to 9-4 with three runs in the bottom of that frame. Lynn's RBI squeeze bunt gave UMHB a 10-4 lead in the top of the sixth and it would stay that way into the ninth. Lynn led off with a solo homer and
Zach Young and
Chris Joshlin added RBI doubles to make it a 13-4 Cru lead.
Kel Shannon would then set down three of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to end it.
Chance Ryan scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs over five innings to improve to 4-0 on the year. He struck out four and walked four.
Kreece Cooper pitched three innings of one-hit relief before Shannon closed it out. Embry had three hits and was only a single short of the cycle. He also drove in three runs. Young had four hits and Joshlin and Lynn also had three hits apiece as UMHB pounded out 19 hits off of six Hardin-Simmons pitchers.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow. The Cru will then play a 7:00 PM non-conference game at Trinity University next Tuesday night in San Antonio.
