Kerrville, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team broke open a pair of tight games with big innings late and the Cru scored a crucial doubleheader sweep of Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in Kerrville. UMHB took game one 8-2 and won game two 7-3 to improve to 18-16 overall and 9-9 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the season. The Mountaineers fall to 6-29 overall and 3-15 in the ASC West with the two losses.
The Cru used a five-run fifth inning to take control of game one on the way to an 8-2 victory.
Seth Mogavero scored on a wild pitch and Dylan Tepoel singled home a run to give UMHB a 2-0 lead in the second. Mogavero added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third inning.
Braden Embry had a two-run double to open the scoring in the fifth,
Josh Fredrick and
Seth Lynn drove in runs with sacrifices and
Justin Gregory's RBI single made it 8-0. The Mountaineers scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but that's as close as Schreiner would get.
Chance Ryan pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter to move to 5-1 on the year.
Chris Joshlin had three of the Cru's 10 hits in the win.
UMHB used a four-run seventh to break open the second game in a 7-3 victory. Schreiner grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Chris Florack's sacrifice fly cut it to 2-1 in the third and the Cru took a 3-2 lead by taking advantage of three Mountaineer errors in the fourth. UMHB scored twice on a Schreiner error in the seventh and added RBI singles from Fredrick and
Seth Lynn to open a 7-2 lead. Schreiner scored one in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to the final margin.
Taylor Burrow scattered seven hits over five and a third innings of scoreless relief work to move to 3-6 on the season. Embry and Lynn had two hits apiece for UMHB in the victory.
The Cru will travel to Tyler for a non-conference game at U.T.-Tyler next Tuesday. UMHB will then host McMurry University for a three-game ASC West Division series next weekend at Red Murff Field. The Cru will enter that series tied with Hardin-Simmons for the fourth and final playoff berth from the West. UMHB holds the tiebreaker over the Cowboys after taking two of three from HSU during the regular season.
