Tyler, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh inning and then held U.T.-Tyler's comeback bid as the Cru posted a 5-4 victory over the Patriots in 11 innings Tuesday night in Tyler. UMHB improves to 19-16 on the season with the victory. The loss drops U.T.-Tyler to 28-9 on the season.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second before UMHB answered with a four-run sixth inning.
Chris Florack and
Seth Mogavero both singled home runs and
Josh Fredrick added a two-run single to make it 4-1 Cru. Tyler used RBI singles from Isaac Tijerina and William Allen to cut it to 4-3 in the bottom of that frame. It would stay that way into the bottom of the ninth before Hayden Chick's two-out single brought home the tying run to send the game to extra innings. Fredrick led off the top of the 11
th with a double and scored on
Cody Emerson's bunt single. The Cru would leave the bases loaded, though, missing a chance to add to the 5-4 lead. Two UMHB errors put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the 11
th, but
Kreece Cooper came on to get Chick to ground out to preserve the victory.
Trevor Alaniz struck out the side in the bottom of the tenth to pick up the win and Cooper notched his second save of the year. Fredrick, Florack,
Zach Young and
Chris Joshlin all had two hits apiece to lead the Cru's 14-hit attack.
The Cru will now return home to close out the regular season with a crucial, three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series against McMurry University. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game Friday night before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday at Red Murff Field. UMHB enters that series tied with Hardin-Simmons for the fourth and final playoff spot from the ASC West Division.
