Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor tennis teams will both open play in the 2012 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournaments tomorrow in Tyler. The UMHB men will open with a 9:30 AM first-round match against U.T.-Dallas on Friday. The Cru women will face Mississippi College in a 1:30 PM start on Friday. Both of those matches will be played at the Summers Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler.
The Cru men will bring a 9-6 overall spring record into Friday's match and the UMHB men are the #2 seed from the ASC West Division. U.T.-Dallas is 10-3 on the year and finished as the #3 seed from the ASC East Division. McMurry University and Mississippi College will meet in the other opening round match at 9:30 AM on Friday at the Tyler Tennis and Swim Center. The winner of the UMHB/UTD match will advance to a 9:30 AM semifinal match against East Division champion U.T.-Tyler on Saturday at the Summers Tennis Center. The McMurry/Mississippi College winner will face Hardin-Simmons at 9:30 AM on Saturday in the other semifinal. The ASC Men's Tennis Championship Match is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start on Sunday at the Summers Tennis Center. The ASC champion will also clinch the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
The UMHB men are making their third straight appearance in the ASC Championship Tournament. The Cru fell to Mississippi College 5-1 in the opening round of last year's tournament.
The Cru women have an 11-5 record on the spring and UMHB is the #2 seed from the ASC West Division. Mississippi College is 6-8 on the spring and claimed the #3 seed from the ASC East. The UMHB/Mississippi College winner will advance to face East Division champion and tournament host U.T.-Tyler in a 1:30 semifinal on Saturday at the Summers Tennis Center. U.T.-Dallas and Howard Payne will face off in the other first round match on Friday with the winner moving on to play McMurry University in the semifinals on Saturday. The ASC Women's Tennis Championship match will be played Sunday at the Summers Tennis Center 30 minutes after the completion of the men's championship match and the winner clinches an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
The Cru women are in the ASC Tournament for the fifth straight year and advanced to the ASC Championship Match last year before falling to eventual tournament champion U.T.-Tyler 5-1.
