Baseball edged by Sul Ross State 10-9

Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead but saw it slip away in the final innings as the Cru lost a 10-9 heartbreaker to Sul Ross State Thursday afternoon in Alpine. The loss drops UMHB to 13-16 overall and 4-9 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the season. The Lobos improve to 7-24 overall and 3-10 in the ASC West on the year with the victory.
 
Sul Ross took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third before the Cru exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth. Chris Joshlin led off with a solo homer, Josh Fredrick added a three-run blast, and then Joshlin doubled home three more runs and score on Braden Embry's single to make it 8-1. Sul Ross added one in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-4. UMHB added a run on Zach Young's RBI single in the top of the eighth. Sul Ross tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Lobos bunched five hits and a pair of Cru errors to make it a 9-9 ballgame. Kreece Cooper came in with the bases loaded and one out and used back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. UMHB went down in order in the top of the ninth. Sul Ross then wrapped three singles around a hit batter in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off victory.
 
Cooper took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. Joshlin, Embry and Seth Lynn had three hits apiece for UMHB in the game and Joshlin drove in four runs. Lucas Garza picked up the win in relief for Sul Ross and Emmet Crisp had three of the Lobos 15 hits.
 
The two teams will close out the series with a 2:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Alpine. UMHB will then play a three-game road series at Schreiner University next weekend in Kerrville.
