Softball splits opening day of Louisiana College Tournament

SHREVEPORT, La. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor split the first day of  play at the Louisiana College Tournament, defeating LeTourneau 5-4 and falling to Louisiana College 3-0. The Cru improves to 1-3 on the season, while LeTourneau falls to 4-1 and Louisiana College improves to 2-0.
 
The Cru gained an early lead against LeTourneau after Victoria Gomez hit a homerun in the top of the third. UMHB added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, led off by Ariel Kemmerer's RBI single. Hannah Parker capped the Cru's offense with an RBI single in the top of the seventh giving UMHB a 5-0 lead. LeTourneau responded strong in the bottom of the seventh with four runs scored but was unable to catch the Cru. UMHB had 10 hits and three errors in the contest compared to LeTourneau's seven hits and one error.
 
Louisiana College scored three unanswered runs against the Cru to take game two 3-0. Candice Biggs put the Wildcats on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Louisiana College scored again in the third and sixth innings to secure the win. UMHB had three hits and no errors in the contest while Louisiana College had three runs on nine hits and no errors.
 
Gomez led the Cru with four hits on the day. Hinojosa and Kemmerer each recorded two with Kemmerer adding an RBI. Rebekah Ragsdale took the win over LeTourneau for the Cru. Ragsdale gave up just seven hits and struck out five batters. Alyssa Fincher took the loss against Louisiana College, giving up nine hits and striking out three batters.
 
UMHB will return to action tomorrow for Day Two of the Louisiana College Tournament with a 1 p.m. game against LeTourneau and a 5 p.m. game against Louisiana College.
