Softball sweeps doubleheader with Sul Ross State

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Sul Ross State in a conference doubleheader Thursday night in Belton, earning 6-0, 8-0 wins over the Lobos.  The Cru improves to 13-13 on the season and 8-6 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Lobos fall to 7-17 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
 
Victoria Gomez opened scoring for the Cru with an RBI double in the top of the first innings. Kelsey Vann added to that with an RBI single, giving UMHB an early 2-0 lead. Kourtney Bevers added another RBI with a single, scoring Janie Neyland from second base. Gomez followed that with an RBI double scoring Bevers, followed by RBIs from Halle Sabo and Kelsey Vann to put the Cru up 6-0 after four and secure the win. Ragsdale earned the win for the Cru on the mound, striking out seven batters and allowing just five hits. Leanne Hinojosa, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, and Gomez led the Cru with three hits each, while Gomez and Vann both had two RBI. UMHB totaled 12 hits and one error while Sul Ross recorded five hits and no errors.
 
The Cru got on the board first again in the second game when Hollie Chennault scored from third off a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Dayton Kunz then scored off a bases-loaded walk before Leanne Hinojosa hit a three-RBI double to put UMHB up 6-0. Neyland and Bevers then recorded RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 8-0 win. Sabo earned the win in the circle for the Cru striking out five batters and allowing just one hit, earning her the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game. UMHB recorded 8 hits and one error in the game while the Lobos had one hit and one error.
 
The Cru will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Sul Ross State beginning at 11 a.m. at Dee Dillon Field.
