ROUND ROCK, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team opened American Southwest Conference West Division Play with a 1-0 and 5-2 sweep of Concordia Texas Friday night in Round Rock. The Cru advances to 7-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while the Tornados fall to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
The Cru gained an early 1-0 lead on the Tornados in the first game of the day with an RBI single from
Kourtney Bevers in the top of the fourth inning, earning her the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game.
Chandler Henson scored on the play, after reaching base on a single and advancing to second on a bunt.
Leanne Hinojosa had three hits on four at-bats in the game, while Henson had three and Bevers and
Caitlin Bollier added two.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win for the Cru, pitching an entire game allowing just three hits and no runs. UMHB had seven hits in the game and recorded no errors, while Concordia had three hits and one error.
Concordia jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the second game, before UMHB responded with an RBI single from
Ariel Kemmerer in the top of the fourth. The Cru added one more in the sixth with an RBI single from Bevers and three in the top of the seventh with an RBI from
Halle Sabo and a two RBI single from Kemmerer, earning her the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game. The Tornados scored again in the bottom of the seventh, but could not catch the Cru. Kemmerer and
Kelsey Vann had three hits in the game, while Hinojosa added two and Bevers, Bollier and
Victoria Gomez added one each. UMHB had 11 hits and 1 error in the game while Concordia had nine hits and one error.
Alyssa Fincher earned the win for the Cru, allowing six hits and striking out five batters.
UMHB returns to action against Concordia tomorrow with matches scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Round Rock.
