ROUND ROCK, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split the second day of play against Concordia Texas with a 5-0 win and 3-2 loss in extra innings to the Tornados. UMHB improves to 8-6 on the season and 3-1 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Tornados move to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
UMHB gained an early 3-0 lead on the Tornados in the first game when
Victoria Gomez hit a three-run homer to left field, earning her the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game. The Cru added two more runs in the top of the fifth when
Caitlin Bollier hit an RBI single scoring
Kourtney Bevers and
Halle Sabo hit an RBI single scoring
Leanne Hinojosa. Gomez led the Cru with two hits.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win for the Cru, pitching a complete seven innings allowing two hits and striking out nine batters. The Cru had seven hits and no errors in the game, while the Tornados had two hits and three errors.
The Tornados took advantage of the first inning in the second game, grabbing an early 2-0 lead. Concordia held that lead until the top of the fifth when UMHB scored two runs with RBI singles from Hinojosa, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, and Gomez. The game remained tied at regulation and went to nine innings, when Concordia scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Sabo led the Cru with two hits in the game and got the loss on the mound, allowing three hits and striking out three batters. UMHB had eight hits and three errors while Concordia recorded nine hits and no errors.
The Cru will return to action next weekend with home matches against Howard Payne beginning with a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 15th and a noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 16th.
