Georgetown, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the tenth inning and the Cru held on for an 11-8, 10-inning victory over Southwestern University Monday night in Georgetown. UMHB evens its record at 14-14 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 2-28 on the year.
UMHB grabbed an early lead, going up 2-0 in the top of the second on
Will Stafford's RBI groundout and a run-scoring wild pitch.
Robert Loewe's RBI single made it 3-0 Cru in the top of the third. The Pirates would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but UMHB put four on the board in the top of the sixth. Stafford scored the first run on the front end of a double steal before Loewe doubled home two runs and scored on
Tyler Taute's RBI single. Southwestern exploded for six runs in the bottom of that inning to take an 8-7 lead after stringing together four hits and three walks.
Chase Burrow was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth to tie it up at eight, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the rally. UMHB would put runners at second and third with two outs in the top of the ninth, but could not push across a run. It would stay 8-8 into the tenth before the Cru broke through. Loewe led off with a single, moved up on Taute's single and an error and scored the go-ahead run on a balk.
Chase Burrow singled home Taute with an insurance run and eventually scored on the front end of another double steal attempt.
Danny Horstman retired Southwestern in the bottom of the tenth to clinch the victory for UMHB.
Horstman earned the win for the Cru to move his record to 1-1 on the year, throwing three innings of one-hit relief. Loewe led the UMHB offense with three hits and three RBI. Taute added two hits on a night the Cru was held to nine base hits as a team. Colton Seeton took the loss for Southwestern to drop to 0-1 on the year. The Pirates were held to eight hits by five UMHB pitchers on the night.
The Cru will now return to action with a three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series against Sul Ross State this weekend at Red Murff Field. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
