Softball sweeps Schreiner, Clinches ASC Tournament Spot

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Schreiner in the opening day of the four-game series and clinched a spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament with 5-0 and 4-0 victories over the Mountaineers. The Cru advances to 20-14 overall and 15-7 in ASC action while Schreiner falls 3-31 overall and 2-16 in conference play.
 
The Cru gained an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI from Tori Gomez, scoring Kourtney Bevers from third base. Chandler Henson got the Cru on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI single, followed by RBI from Bevers and Leanne Hinojosa. UMHB added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 5-0 victory. Halle Sabo and Kelsey Vann led the Cru with two hits. UMHB totaled seven hits and one error while the Mountaineers had four hits and two errors. Rebekah Ragsdale, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, earned her 13th win of the season in the circle, striking out seven batters and allowing just four hits.
 
Bevers led off the second game with a single, followed by an RBI triple from Hinojosa to again give the Cru a 1-0 lead. Hinojosa scored off an RBI from Halle Sabo, extending the Cru's lead to 2-0 lead after the first. UMHB held that lead until the bottom of the fifth when Gomez and Caitlin Bollier recorded RBI for a 4-0 lead and win. UMHB totaled nine hits and one error while the Mountaineers had four hits and two errors. Bevers, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, Vann and Brittany Moreno led the Cru with two hits. Bevers and Hinojosa each recorded two runs. Sabo earned the win in the circle, allowing just four hits and striking out four batters.
 
The Cru will return to action tomorrow in the second day of action against the Mountaineers with a doubleheader at Dee Dillon Field beginning at 1 p.m.
