BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Schreiner University in the second day of play in Belton, with a pair of 6-1 wins over the Mountaineers. The Cru improves to 24-14 on the season and 17-7 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Mountaineers fall to 3-33 overall and 2-18 in conference play.
In the first game,
Caitlin Bollier got the Cru on the board first with an RBI single, scoring
Halle Sabo from third. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Tori Gomez and Sabo put the Cru up 4-0 in the bottom of the third before
Kelsey Vann's triple scored Sabo. Vann advanced to home on the throw, giving the Cru a 6-0 lead after three. The Mountaineers put a run on the board in the top of the fourth but could not catch the Cru, giving UMHB the 6-1 win. Sabo, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, led the Cru with two hits and two runs.
Kourtney Bevers,
Leanne Hinojosa, Gomez and Vann each recorded one run while Gomez also had two RBI. UMHB totaled seven hits while the Mountaineers had two. Both teams committed one error.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win in the circle for UMHB, striking out nine batters and allowing just two hits.
The Cru used a big second inning to jump ahead of Schreiner with an RBI single from
Dayton Kunz and a two RBI double from
Chandler Henson. The Cru extended that lead in the bottom of the fourth with RBI from
Ariel Kemmerer and
Kourtney Bevers. UMHB added another run in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-0 lead. The Mountaineers responded with a one-run sixth inning but could not mount enough of a comeback to catch the Cru. Seven athletes had hits in the game, including two RBI from Henson, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, and Kunz.
Halle Sabo earned the win, allowing four hits and one run. UMHB totaled seven hits and no errors while the Mountaineers had four hits and two errors.
The Cru will return to action April 20th with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Houston-Victoria at Dee Dillon Field.
