BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Houston-Victoria Saturday in Belton, earning 6-2, 3-2 victories over the Jaguars. UMHB improves to 26-14 overall while Houston-Victoria falls to 23-19.
The Jaguars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second before
Kourtney Bevers hit an RBI double to tie the game and Tori Gomez recorded an RBI single, giving UMHB a 2-1 lead after three complete innings. Houston-Victoria responded in the top of the fifth with a homerun from Ashley Shannon tying the game at 2 before
Caitlin Bollier and
Kelsey Vann hit back-to-back RBI singles and
Ariel Kemmerer blasted a two-run homer to give UMHB the 6-2 lead. Gomez led the Cru with two hits while Kemmerer, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, led the Cru with two RBI. UMHB totaled eight hits while Houston-Victoria had five. Neither team recorded an error.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and two runs. She also struck out five batters.
Houston-Victoria again took a 1-0 lead on the Cru, scoring a run off a homerun by Marley Moehrig in the top of the fourth. Bevers scored in the bottom of the fifth off an error by the Jaguars to tie the game at one. The Jaguars added one more run in the top of the seventh before
Victoria Gomez, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, hit a two-run walk-off homerun to secure the Cru's 3-2 win. Bevers led UMHB with four hits while Gomez had a team-high two RBI. UMHB totaled six hits and three errors while the Jaguars had five hits and two errors.
Alyssa Fincher earned the win in the circle for the Cru.
The Cru will return to action next Thursday, April 25th in the American Southwest Conference Tournament at Oran Good Park in Farmers Branch, Texas.
