Softball sweeps Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Hardin-Simmons Friday afternoon with 10-2, 13-3 victories over the Cowgirls. The Cru improves to 16-14 on the season and 11-7 in American Southwest Conference play, while Hardin-Simmons falls to 10-17-1 overall and 8-6 in conference action.
 
UMHB gained an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third of game one when Tori Gomez hit an RBI double and Kelsey Vann hit an RBI single. The Cowgirls responded with two runs of their own, before UMHB one run in the top of the fourth, another in the top of the fifth and six in the top of the sixth. Gomez, Vann and Leanne Hinojosa all had a team-high two hits for the Cru. Vann, the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game, and Caitlin Bollier recorded 2 RBI each. UMHB had 12 hits and no errors, while Hardin-Simmons committed two errors and recorded eight hits. Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win for UMHB, striking out three batters and allowing just two runs.
 
Hardin-Simmons jumped to an early 1-0 game two lead on the Cru in the bottom of the first, before UMHB responded with a five-run second inning. The Cowgirls scored twice more before UMHB added three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth for a 13-3 lead and eventually win. Vann again led the Cru with three hits, while Gomez, Chandler Henson and Janie Neyland added two each. Gomez also hit four RBI, earning her the Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game. The Cru totaled 13 hits and three errors while the Cowgirls had eight hits and no errors. Halle Sabo went 3.2 innings in the circle, allowing three runs and seven hits. Taylor Grissom came in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit.
 
The Cru will return to action tomorrow in a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons in Abilene.
