Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will open the 2013 season with the first trip to California in the 16-year history of the program Saturday night (September 7
th). The Cru will face the University of Redlands in a 7:00 PM Pacific Time kickoff in the season opener for both teams. UMHB leads the all-time series with the Bulldogs 1-0 after posting a 34-13 victory in the First Round of the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championships in Belton.
The Cru returns 46 letter winners from last year's team, but must replace its leading passer, rusher and receiver in addition to two All-American offensive linemen on that side of the ball. Senior
Jake Sims will likely get the start at quarterback with
Brian Gallagher limited with an injury. Sims will have help from two Preseason All-Americans in offensive tackle
Montana Duncan and running back
Elijah Hudson. There is also a deep group of runners and receivers to compliment that duo and the Cru coaching staff is anxious to get the team on the field.
"The biggest question mark we have is that we've got to develop a quarterback who can take us where we want to go," Cru Head Coach
Pete Fredenburg said. "It is a work in progress right now. This whole thing is a process and it is still early. We've got to build and develop this team to reach the goals we have set for ourselves."
ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Silvio Diaz headlines a defense that welcomes back eight starters. The presence of five returning All-Conference selections on defense helps soften the blow of losing two-time ASC Defensive Player of the Year
Javicz Jones. Kicker/punter
Chad Peevey also returns after being voted ASC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.
