Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team continued its sweep of Howard Payne Saturday afternoon with back-to-back 2-0 and 4-1 victories over the Yellow Jackets. UMHB improves to 4-5 on the season and 3-3 in American Southwest Conference play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
In the first game,
Halle Sabo gave the Cru a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single, scoring
Leah Brown from second base. Tori Gomez extended the Cru's lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single. Taylor Rushing hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to cut the Cru's lead to one.
Rebekah Ragsdale struck out her next batter to secure the 2-1 victory for UMHB. Ragsdale earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with six hits and one run allowed, striking out 10 batters.
Halle Sabo led the Cru with two hits, followed by
Faith Escobar and Tori Gomez each with one. Howard Payne totaled six hits and one run while UMHB had four hits and two runs.
Faith Escobar gave the Cru an early 1-0 advantage in the second game with an RBI double, scoring
Myranda Hinojosa.
Corina Drake followed that with a groundout to the short stop, allowing
Leah Brown to score from third and give UMHB a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Myranda Hinojosa's two-RBI double in the bottom of the second extended UMHB's lead to four before Howard Payne added a run in the top of the third.
Halle Sabo earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching six innings with 1 strikeout and four hits allowed.
Myranda Hinojosa led the Cru with five hits, followed by
Faith Escobar,
Corina Drake and Tori Gomez each with one. UMHB totaled five hits and four errors while Howard Payne recorded four hits and one error.
UMHB returns to action Tuesday, February 25th in a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Trinity University. The Cru returns to conference play Friday, February 28th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against LeTourneau at Dee Dillon Field.
