Baseball edged by Texas Lutheran in season opener

Cru gives up three runs in bottom of the ninth in heartbreaking loss

Seguin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team saw a two-run lead slip away with a pair of costly throwing errors in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Cru dropped an 8-7 decision to Texas Lutheran University Tuesday night in Seguin. UMHB is now 0-1 to start the season following the loss. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 on the year with the victory.

The Cru grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning with three hits and two Bulldog errors. Tripp Reeves, Riley Davis and Seth Martin all scored in the frame for UMHB. TLU would tie the game with two in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the fourth. UMHB grabbed a 4-3 lead on Davis' RBI single in the top of the fifth, but TLU used an RBI triple and run-scoring wild pitch for a 5-4 lead in the bottom of that inning. Zack Whiddon ripped a shot to left field in the top of the seventh inning that ended up going for a two-run error to give the Cru a 6-5 lead and Davis added another RBI single to make it 7-5 UMHB. The Bulldogs then used a bloop single and a walk to put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth. Zach Jacobs attempted to bunt the runners over and UMHB committed a pair of throwing errors on the play, allowing the tying runs to score and Jacobs to scurry over to third base with no outs. The Cru loaded the bases with a pair of intentional walks before Klaus Bohrmann drove in the game-winner with a sacrifice fly to deep right-center field.

Ty Johnson took the loss for UMHB to fall to 0-1 on the year. Davis, Reeves and Will Stafford had two hits apiece for the Cru. UMHB used eight pitchers in the game. Logan Domino earned the win for TLU to move to 1-0 on the season. Four players had two hits each in the Bulldogs' nine-hit attack.

The Cru will now return home to open American Southwest Conference play with a three-game series against Howard Payne University this weekend at Red Murff Field. The two teams will open that series with a 6:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
