LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fought through harsh weather conditions in Longview to defeat the YellowJackets 5-0 Friday evening. The win improved UMHB to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in American Southwest Conference play while LeTourneau fell to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
Cori Drake opened up a strong first inning for UMHB as the Cru took a 4-0 lead. Drake hit an RBI single to score
Leah Brown for the first run, before
Myranda Hinojosa hit an RBI single to centerfield to score Drake for a 2-0 lead.
Kelsey Vann closed scoring in the first with a two RBI double to centerfield, scoring Hinojosa and
Karley Free on the play. UMHB added another run in the top of the second when
Leah Brown hit a single, causing LeTourneau to commit an error and allowing
Amelia Cluke to score.
Haley Parker earned the shutout win for the Cru, pitching a complete game with 7 hits and four strikeouts. Courtney Matulis took the loss for the YellowJackets, allowing five runs on six hits with one strikeout. UMHB totaled five runs on nine hits with one error. LeTourneau had no runs with seven hits and two errors.
UMHB returns to action tomorrow in an 11 a.m. doubleheader against the YellowJackets in Longview. The Cru resumes action at Dee Dillon Field on Friday, March 6
th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against East Texas Baptist University.
