BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team beat Sul Ross State University 10-0 Friday afternoon in Belton and played four innings into the doubleheader's second game. The Cru holds an 11-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning over the Lobos, but that game has been suspended due to lightning in the area. The win improved the Cru to 17-11 on the season and 15-7 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos fell to 3-24 overall and 3-20 in conference play.
Karley Free gave the Cru a lead in the bottom of the first, hitting a double to left field scoring Kourtney Bevers from second base for a 1-0 Cru lead. UMHB held that lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Cru put up two runs on back-to-back fielder's choices. Leanne Hinojosa batted Amelia Cluke for a 2-0 lead before Myranda Hinojosa scored Leah Brown on a sacrifice fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead. Leanne Hinojosa scored next on a passed ball for a 4-0 lead, before Myranda Hinojosa and Christy Garrett reached home plate on an error by the Lobos, extending UMHB's lead to six runs. Free struck again in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a game-winning grand slam to seal the 10-0 win for the Cru. Bevers led the Cru with two runs while eight other Crusaders each recorded one. Free had a team-high four hits and five RBI while Bevers added two hits and Neyland recorded two RBI. Tiffany Birdwell earned the win in the circle, pitching six innings with just two hits allowed. UMHB totaled ten runs on nine hits with no errors while the Lobos had two hits and one error.
Free again gave UMHB a lead in the bottom of the first, scoring Janie Neyland with an RBI single. Leah Brown struck next, hitting a home run over the centerfield wall, scoring Bevers and Free for a 4-0 lead. UMHB took a 5-0 lead after Myranda Hinojosa scored on a Bailey Bohlken RBI single. Leanne Hinojosa scored next off a passed ball before Bevers hit a two-RBI single to score Bohlken and Jordan Hughes for an 8-0 advantage after the first inning. Brown then hit back-to-back home runs in the second and third innings, extending UMHB's lead to 11. After the conclusion of the fourth inning, the game was suspended due to lighting risk in the area with UMHB holding the 11-0 lead.
Leah Brown's three home runs broke the UMHB Division III record for home runs in a game and tied the ASC record in that category. UMHB will finish today's suspended game tomorrow at noon and play the series' third game immediately following.
