Baseball tops LeTourneau 5-2

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team made the final home game of the season a memorable with an eighth-inning rally as the Cru posted a 5-2 victory over LeTourneau University Sunday in Belton. UMHB improves to 18-17 overall and 15-12 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the YellowJackets to 14-15 overall and 12-11 in ASC play on the year.

 

LeTourneau took a 1-0 lead when Dillon Yates led off the top of the fourth inning with a homer to left field. The YellowJackets tried to stretch it to 2-0 with a squeeze play in the top of the fifth, but Caleb Pritchett was tagged home out at home plate trying to score. UMHB answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Dakota Parsons' RBI double and Rob Loewe's sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead. The Cru had a chance to add to the lead in the bottom of the seventh, but left the bases loaded. Ryan Bertram's RBI single tied the game at two in the top of the eighth inning. UMHB strung together five straight hits with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. K.J. Stark, Parsons and Loewe had RBI singles to give the Cru a 5-2 lead. The YellowJackets had back-to-back singles to open the ninth, but Stark came on to record a strikeout and game-ending double play to notch his third save of the year.

 

Cory Farr picked up the win to move to 4-1. Kreece Cooper struck out six and allowed just two runs on three hits in seven and a third solid innings as UMHB's starter. Stark and Will Stafford had three hits apiece for the Cru and Parsons, Loewe and Seth Martin added two hits apiece. Cody Whitley took the loss for LeTourneau to drop to 2-6 on the season. Pritchett had two of the YellowJackets six hits in the game.

 

The game was the regular season home finale for UMHB. The Cru will play a non-conference game at Trinity University Tuesday night in San Antonio before closing out the regular season with a three-game conference series at Concordia Texas next weekend in Austin.
