TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fell 5-0 to No. 1 seed University of Texas at Tyler Thursday evening in Tyler. The loss drops the Cru to 21-17 on the season and moves them to the elimination bracket while the Patriots improve to 38-1 and advance to the semifinals.
Vanessa Carrizales gave the Patriots a lead in the bottom of the first, hitting an RBI single to score Jackie Mendez for a 1-0 UTT lead. The Patriots added one more run in the bottom of the second before constructing a three-run bottom of the third for a 5-0 lead. UMHB was unable to generate a scoring offense, giving U.T.-Tyler the 5-0 victory. Janie Neyland and Kourtney Bevers were the only two Crusaders to record a hit in the contest. Haley Parker took the loss for UMHB, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout. Tiffany Birdwell pitched in relief of Parker, allowing three runs on four hits in four innings pitched. UMHB totaled two hits and no errors while the Patriots had five runs on nine hits with no errors.
UMHB moves to the elimination bracket and will face No. 6 seed LeTourneau on Friday, May 1st at 1 p.m. The Patriots will advance to face No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist at 4 p.m. Friday in a semifinal game.
