Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team avoided the big inning, but could not string together enough hits to overcome a bunch of smaller innings in a 7-4 loss to Pomona-Pitzer Friday night in Belton. The Cru falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss. The Sagehens improve to 2-0 on the year with the victory.
Pomona-Pitzer took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third in a run-scoring error and Bryce Rogan's RBI single. Will Stafford doubled and scored on Seth Martin's single in the bottom of the third to cut it to 2-1. Simon Rosenbaum made it 3-1 Sagehens with an RBI single in the top of the fourth and Cade Hulse added an RBI single in the fifth to push it to 4-1. Stafford doubled again and scored on a Dakota Parsons single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2. Rogan had a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh and Max Conway scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-3. Pomona-Pitzer added single runs in the eighth and ninth to stretch the lead to 7-3. UMHB added a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth and loaded the bases on three Sagehen errors, but could not close the gap from there.
Stafford had two of the Cru's six hits and also threw out a runner at home plate. Seth Hill took the loss for UMHB after giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings. Nicholas Radich (1-0) earned the win for PP with nine strikeouts in seven innings. Jacob McGowan closed it out for his first save. Hulse had three hits and three other players added two hits apiece to pace the Sagehens' 13-hit attack.
The Cru will play two more games on Saturday and one on Sunday. UMHB opens Saturday's play with a 3:00 PM start against Whitworth University before facing Piedmont College at 7:00 PM.
