Softball drops doubleheader to No. 1 U.T.-Tyler


BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped a pair of conference games to No. 1 University of Texas at Tyler Friday evening in Belton. UMHB dropped a 5-3 contest to the Patriots before falling 9-0, ending the day at 4-10 on the season and 3-8 in American Southwest Conference action. U.T.-Tyler improved to 10-2 overall and 8-0 in league play.
 
U.T.-Tyler got on the board first in the opening game when Jackie Mendez hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Raven Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead. UMHB responded in the top of the third when Leah Brown hit a home run over the right center field wall, tying the contest at 1-1. UMHB scored one more run in the inning when Karley Free singled, scoring Christy Garrett for a 2-1 lead. U.T.-Tyler added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the sixth for a 5-2 lead before Devon Walter hit a line shot home run over the left center field wall to cut the Patriots lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh. UMHB was not able to score again, giving U.T.-Tyler the 5-3 victory. Free led the Cru with two hits while Brown, Garrett and Walter each added one. Haley Parker took the loss for the Cru, pitching five innings with three runs and six hits allowed. Kelsey Knox pitched in relief, going two innings with three hits and two runs allowed. UMHB totaled three runs on five hits with no errors while the Patriots had five runs on nine hits with two errors.
 
The Patriots got out to an early lead in the top of the second inning when Kristin Lopez hit an RBI double to score Mendez and Kailey Henderson for a 2-0 lead. U.T.-Tyler added one more run in the top of the third when KK Stevens hit a home run to left field for a 3-0 advantage. The Patriots added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning and two in the top of the fifth to secure the 9-0 victory. Leah Brown recorded the lone hit for the Cru. Karen Tennis took the loss for UMHB, pitching 3.2 innings with six hits, six runs and three earned runs. Knox pitched in relief again, going 1.1 innings with four hits and one earned run. UMHB totaled one run and two errors while the Patriots had nine runs on 10 hits with no errors.
 
UMHB concludes the series tomorrow in a 1 p.m. single game against the Patriots at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
