BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Trinity University Wednesday evening in Belton, beating the Tigers 2-0 and 4-2. The wins improved the Cru to 14-15 on the season while Trinity dropped to 20-10.
Kourtney Cummings opened scoring for the Cru in the first contest, hitting a home run over the center field wall to give UMHB a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third.
Christy Garrett added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring off an RBI single from
Kasi Cummings for a 2-0 UMHB lead and eventually the win.
Kourtney Cummings and
Leah Brown led the Cru with two hits each while
Kourtney Cummings and
Kasi Cummings each recorded RBI. UMHB's
Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle, pitching the complete-game shutout with three hits allowed and one strikeout. Trinity's Kaci Wellik took the loss, pitching six innings with two earned runs and seven strikeouts. UMHB totaled two runs on seven hits with three errors while the Tigers had three hits and one error.
Cori Drake hit the Cru's second home run of the day in the second game, driving in
Karley Free with a home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trinity responded, adding two runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 2-2 tie. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when
Kourtney Cummings drilled her second home run of the day, hitting one over left center field for the walk-off home run for the 4-2 victory.

Karley Free, Drake and
Elizabeth Bowne each scored runs. UMHB's
Haley Parker earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete seven innings with four hits and two runs allowed. Trinity's Katie Glomb took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings with three hits and two runs allowed. The Cru totaled four runs on eight hits with three errors while Trinity had two runs on four hits.
UMHB continues play this weekend in a road series at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. The series opens Friday, April 8
th with a 1 p.m. doubleheader and concludes with a 12 p.m. single game on Saturday, April 9
th.
