Baseball falls to McMurry 6-4

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team rallied late, but fell just short in a 6-4 loss to McMurry University Friday night in Belton. The loss drops the Cru to 8-11 on the season while the War Hawks improve to 9-13 with the victory.

McMurry grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning. UMHB answered when a War Hawk throwing error allowed Caleb Davis and Jackson Godoy to score in the bottom of the third to tie the game 2-2. A walk, two groundouts and a run-scoring wild pitch gave McMurry a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth and Payton Stokes' RBI single made it 4-2 War Hawks in the top of the sixth. UMHB loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of that inning, but were unable to push across a run. It would stay that way into the ninth inning. McMurry scored two runs on an RBI single from Randy Crevier and Tyler Jenkins' run-scoring double. Mark Frankhouser's sacrifice fly score Davis to cut the gap and Godoy scored on a passed ball to close it to 6-4 and bring the winning run to the plate for UMHB in the bottom of the ninth, but Jenkins ended up striking out the side to preserve the victory for McMurry.

Nathan Kent took the loss for the Cru to fall to 2-3 on the year despite giving up just two earned runs in five and a third innings. UMHB was held to four hits by five War Hawk pitchers. Davis and Godoy scored two runs apiece for the Cru. Juan Valadez picked up the win for McMurry to move to 3-2 and Jenkins notched his second save. Crevier had four of McMurry's 10 hits in the game.

The two teams close out the non-conference series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday at Red Murff Field. UMHB will then travel to Georgetown to take on Southwestern University on Tuesday night.
