TYLER, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team will open play in the 2017 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament Thursday on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler. The Cru finished the regular season at 26-14 and with a 20-10 record in conference play. UMHB will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed. The event runs Thursday, April 27th – Saturday, April 29th with the championship game set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
 
UMHB will open the tournament on Thursday, April 27th in a 1 p.m. game against No. 5 seed Louisiana College. The winner of that game will advance to face No. 1 seed UT Tyler at 7 p.m. No. 3 seed UT Dallas opens the tournament against No. 6 seed Concordia Texas with a 10 a.m. match on Thursday. The winner of that contest advances to face No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist at 4 p.m. Friday's schedule opens with a pair of elimination games before a 4 p.m. semifinal match. Friday closes with a 7 p.m. elimination game. The winner of that contest will advance to Saturday's 2 p.m. semifinal contest. The championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday with an if-needed game on Sunday, April 30th at 1 p.m.
 
The Cru is making its 18th appearance in the tournament, tying East Texas Baptist as the conference school with the most appearances in the event. The Cru is 19-34 all-time in the tournament and has advanced to the championship game three times. UMHB is 7-8 against tournament opponents this season with a 2-1 mark against Louisiana College. The 2017 tournament also features three nationally ranked opponents in No. 2 UT Tyler, No. 14 East Texas Baptist and No. 16 UT Dallas.

This is the 18th year of the ASC Championship Tournament and second year back to a six-team bracket after spending three seasons with an eight-team tournament. Admission to the tournament is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. UT Tyler operates under the ASC's No Pet Policy and will enforce that rule for leashed and unleashed pets within the confines of the facility. The winner of the tournament will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Softball Championships.
