LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's tennis team fell behind in doubles and a rally in singles fell short as the Cru dropped a 6-1 decision to LeTourneau University in the Quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Thursday in Longview.
The Yellowjackets swept doubles in three tightly contested matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. A win at #2 singles stretched the LeTourneau lead to 4-0.
Cole Weiss posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #3 singles to put UMHB on the board. The Yellowjackets would close out the match with simultaneous wins at #1 and #6 singles. The Cru's
Jace Mahan had a one-set lead and was up in the second set at #5 singles and UMHB's
Josh Roselius seemed on the verge of forcing a third set at #4 singles when the match ended.
The loss ends the Cru's season at 7-7 and also closes out the UMHB careers of seniors
Jake Boles and
Alex Mackellar. The match was also the final contest for Cru Head Coach
James Cohagan. Cohagan is retiring in May after nearly 40 years as head coach of both the UMHB men's and women's tennis programs. LeTourneau improves to 12-7 on the year with the victory and advances to face UT-Dallas in a 2 pm Semifinal Match on Friday.
