BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead and worked out of a couple of late inning jams in a 7-4 victory over Southwestern University Tuesday night in Belton. The Cru improves to 3-1 on the season with the win. The loss drops the Pirates to 2-2 on the year.

UMHB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Malek Bolin singled home Caimyn Holiday. Southwestern tied it in the top of the second, but the Cru answered in the bottom of that frame with three runs. Sal Camilleri singled home a run, Landon Dieterich scored on a wild pitch and Camilleri stole home on the front end of a double steal. The Pirates added a run in the top of the third to cut it to 4-2, but UMHB answered that run with another run-scoring wild pitch in the bottom of the inning. Camilleri doubled home two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-2. Lance Kruse shaved the lead to 7-4 with a two-run double in the top of the seventh, but Trevor Ripke worked out of jams in each of the final two innings with the tying run at the plate to preserve the victory.

Landon Murray (1-0) earned the win for UMHB after allowing just one hit and two runs in five innings. Ripke scattered seven hits in four innings of relief to notch the save. The duo combined to strike out 13 batters on the night. Bolin and Camilleri had two hits apiece among UMHB's six hits in the game.

The Cru will now return to action with the start of American Southwest Conference play this weekend. UMHB will travel to Pineville, Louisiana to take on Louisiana College in a three-game series opening with a 4 pm doubleheader on Friday.
