BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used a 16-2 run to break the game open and the Cru never looked back in a 68-49 victory over Sul Ross State Thursday in Belton. UMHB improves to 16-4 overall and 9-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the Lobos to 5-15 overall and 3-8 in the ASC on the year.
Sul Ross grabbed a 10-9 lead with 5:27 left to play in the opening period. The Cru closed that quarter with an 8-2 run and then scored the first eight points of the second to take control of the game. UMHB's defense limited the Lobos to just five points on 14 percent shooting in the second quarter to build a 35-17 lead at the break. The Cru led 52-28 at the end of the third period and Sul Ross never got closer than the final margin the rest of the way.
Hannah Holt led UMHB with 19 points and
Madison McCoy added 14. Eight other players also scored for the Cru, including
Alexia Martin with eight off the bench. UMHB shot 38 percent from the field as a team, but was just 3-15 from beyond the arc and 11-24 from the free-throw line. UMHB did out rebound the Lobos 52-44 and forced 23 turnovers on the night.
Maria Maldonado had a game-high 20 points to lead Sul Ross. Chandre Nunez added 11 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. The Lobos shot just 32 percent from the field as a team and was 4-16 from long-range. Sul Ross took just two free-throws in the game, hitting one of them.
The Cru women will close out the home schedule with another key ASC West Division game on Saturday. UMHB will host Howard Payne University for a 1 pm start at the Mayborn Campus Center.
