LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but saw it slip away in the late innings in a 4-2 loss to LeTourneau University Friday evening in Longview. The Cru drops to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. The YellowJackets improve to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in the ASC with the win.
UMHB grabbed a 2-0 lead on
Hunter McQuary's two-run single in the top of the first inning. An RBI groundout cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the first and LeTourneau tied the game on Weston McKinley's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Noah Mahoney drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the bottom of the eighth and McKinley's sacrifice fly added an insurance run. The Cru did not get a baserunner into scoring position after the first inning.
McQuary had three of UMHB's eight hits on the night.
Jeb Zolman scattered four hits and allowed two runs in seven innings in a no-decision as
Cooper Nelson took the loss for the Cru. Mahoney and Chaz Jackson had two hits apiece for LeTourneau. Kolton Eberlan pitched a complete-game, eight-hitter for the YellowJackets to improve to 3-1 on the year.
The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. UMHB will then return home to host five games over Spring Break next week.
