Softball concludes play at NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fell 17-13 to Washington Univ.-St. Louis Sunday morning in Tucson, ending play in the 2020 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic. UMHB went 3-1 in the classic and improved to 12-3 on the season.
 
Offenses were on full display for both the Cru and the Bears as the contest saw 18 runs in the first two innings. UMHB scored on an RBI single from Izzy Gutierrez and an RBI walk from Ashley Estrada in the first inning. The Bears evened the contest in the bottom of that frame, scoring two runs on an error. UMHB responded with a seven-run second inning. Bailey Stoker was the first Crusader to score before Milly Cesare doubled to score Lexi Harris. Gutierrez and Elliott both recorded RBI in the inning before Whitney Flournoy slammed a three-RBI home run to put the Cru up 9-2. The Bears responded again, scoring seven runs off eight hits to even the contest at nine. Korbyn Bassett hit a two-RBI home run in the third to put the Cru up again before WUSTL took its first lead of the contest with four runs in the bottom of the inning. UMHB put up single-run innings in the fourth and fifth, but the Bears doubled that in the bottom of those frames, ending the contest with a 17-13 WUSTL win.
 
Four Crusaders recorded two hits each while Bassett scored a team-high three runs and Gutierrez and Flournoy had a team-high three RBI. Three Crusaders shared pitching duties for UMHB. Camryn Rucker opened the game throwing 1.1 innings with nine runs allowed. Darilek pitched in relief, throwing 1.1 innings with four runs allowed. Kami Flores pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Cru, allowing four runs. Holly Stoner earned the win for the Bears, throwing the final four innings with one hit and one run allowed. UMHB totaled 13 runs on 12 hits with three errors while the Bears had 17 runs on 14 hits with one error.
 
UMHB was scheduled to play Central, but the classic was called early due to weather in the area. The Cru returns home March 13th – 14th with an American Southwest Conference series against LeTourneau University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
