Softball splits doubleheader with Trinity

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fought back from a game one loss to grab control of game two as the Cru split a doubleheader with Trinity University Wednesday in Belton. UMHB won game two 8-1 after falling 7-4 in the opener. The Cru is now 3-4 on the season while the Tigers move to 3-1.

UMHB scored the final eight runs of the game on the way to that 8-1 game two victory. The Tigers took the lead with a solo home run in the top of the first, but Elissa Elliott answered with a solo shot of her own in the bottom of the frame. Bailey Wagner scored on Milly Cesare's single in the bottom of the third to give the Cru a 2-1 lead. UMHB added five runs in the fifth on Tyeann Johnson's suicide squeeze bunt, Elliott's two-run double and Bailey Eggleston's two-run homer. The final run scored on Elisabeth Paul's pinch-hit, RBI single on the bottom of the sixth. Cesare had three hits and Elliott and Eggleston added two apiece. That dup also combined to drive in five runs. Bayleigh Grogan tossed a complete-game, five-hitter to raise her record to 2-1 on the year.

Trinity made the most of three UMHB errors in game one, scoring six unearned runs on the way to a 7-4 win. Eggleston scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first to give the Cru a 1-0 lead. Trinity then put five runs on the board in the top of fifth inning as UMHB committed a pair of costly errors. Elliott cut it to 5-2 with an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of that inning. Tatum Stover and Wagner singled home runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 5-4, but the Tigers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Eggleston had two of the Cru's eight hits and Jules Martinez took the loss in the circle despite taking a perfect game into the top of the fourth inning.

The Cru will now open American Southwest Conference play with a three-game series at LeTourneau University this weekend in Longview. The two teams will play a 4 pm doubleheader on Friday before closing out the weekend with a single game at noon on Saturday.
