Mojica splits in debut as head coach

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split its first day of 2021 competition, going 1-1 against Southwestern University Saturday afternoon in Georgetown.
 
UMHB opened the day with a three-run first inning. Lexi Harris and Bailey Eggleston scored on an error before Elissa Elliott hit a sacrifice fly to score Izzy Gutierrez. That score held until the third inning when Milly Cesare scored on an RBI from Gutierrez. The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on an error. UMHB closed out the game with a five-run fifth inning. Kylee Flores opened scoring, reaching home on an error. Gutierrez followed that with a three-RBI triple before scoring on an error to give UMHB the 9-1 victory. UMHB held the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of that frame, earning Mojica's first win as head coach. Five different Crusaders recorded hits in the contest while Gutierrez led the Cru with four RBI. Camryn Rucker earned the win in the circle for UMHB, pitching a complete five innings with three hits and one run allowed. UMHB totaled nine runs on five hits with two errors while Southwestern had one run on three hits with three errors.
 
Southwestern imitated the Cru in the second contest, opening the contest with a three-run first inning. UMHB responded with a single run from Elissa Elliott in the second inning before putting up three innings in the third. Eggleston scored on an RBI from Bailey Wagner before Tatum Stover hit in Alyssa Bates and Gutierrez with a single. UMHB added three more runs in the fourth inning. Lexi Harris hit in Tyeann Johnson with an RBI single before Eggleston scored on an error and Harris scored off a single from Gutierrez. The Pirates added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning then sent the game into extra innings with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Southwestern sealed the win in the bottom of the ninth inning, splitting the day 1-1 with an 8-7 second-game victory. Eggleston led the Cru with three hits and two runs while Stover had a team-high two RBI. Five pitchers combined for time in the circle for the Cru. UMHB totaled seven runs on 11 hits with two errors while the Pirates had eight runs on 15 hits with four errors.
 
UMHB returns to action on Monday, February 8th in a 3 p.m. single game against the University of Texas at Dallas in Belton. Dee Dillon Field will be at a 50% capacity with priority given to participating teams' pass lists. For more information, visit cruathletics.com.
