Softball steals a pair from Houston-Victoria

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a Tuesday doubleheader with the University of Houston-Victoria Tuesday evening in Belton, beating the Jaguars 2-1 and 3-1.

The first contest played scoreless through four complete innings as UMHB pitcher Bayleigh Grogan surrendered just one hit. Houston-Victoria's Cameron Cowan singled to score Madisyn Leighton in the top of the fifth inning to give UHV a 1-0 lead. UMHB came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh inning and evened the contest at 1-1 off an RBI single from Allyse Castillo. Houston-Victoria put one on base off a single in the top of the eighth but Grogan forced a groundout to end the inning. Lexi Harris led off the bottom of that frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Elissa Elliott. Milly Cesare followed with a fielder's choice that almost eliminated Harris but an interference call left her on second. Taylor Holman came up next, slamming an RBI single to right field to score Harris and end the contest at 2-1. Castillo led the Cru with two hits while four others recorded one. UMHB totaled two runs on six hits with no errors while the Jaguars had one run on four hits with one error. Grogan pitched a complete eight innings for the Cru, giving up just one run and four hits with three strikeouts.

UMHB took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the second contest. Harris and Elliott reached on a pair of singles before Eggleston slammed a two-RBI triple down the right field line scoring both base runners. The Jaguars responded in the top of the next frame, scoring Madisyn Leighton off an RBI single from Kayla Dow. Elliott batted in an insurance run for the Cru in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending Tyeann Johnson home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Camryn Rucker pitched around a pair of base runners for the Jaguars in the top of the seventh to get the save for UMHB. Kami Flores earned the win in the circle, throwing five innings with two hits and one run allowed. Harris and Eggleston led the Cru with nine hits each. UMHB totaled three runs on nine hits while the Jaguars had one run on five hits.

The Cru returns to action on Wednesday, March 10th in a 6 p.m. single game against Southwestern University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
