ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball dropped a 5-0 contest to Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon in Alpine. UMHB moved to 14-12 overall and 9-7 in American Southwest Conference while the Lobos moved to 9-7 overall and 9-5 in league play.
Sul Ross State opened with a three-run inning in the first. Back-to-back singles from Miranda Martinez and Nadia Valverde scored Samantha Chavez and Annika Canaba. The Lobos scored one more run in that inning to hold a 3-0 lead. Sul Ross put up single-run innings in the second and the fourth, ending the game with a 5-0 win over UMHB.
Bailey Eggleston led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders added one each.
Bayleigh Grogan took the loss for UMHB, pitching four innings with seven hits and five run allowed. Jodie Vaughn earned the win for the Lobos, throwing seven shutout innings with six hits allowed. UMHB totaled six hits and one error while the Lobos had five runs on eight hits with one error.
UMHB returns to action next weekend in a home series against Howard Payne University. The series opens with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 9
th and closes with a 12 p.m. single game on Saturday, April 10
th.
