BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team fell to Pacific Lutheran University 4-2 in the NCAA DIII Men's Soccer First Round. The Lutes improved to 17-3-0 on the season while the Cru closed out their season with a 13-3-2 record.
Pacific Lutheran grabbed an early goal when Robby Guyer scored in the 11
th minute off an assist from Trevor Thompson. The Lutes saw a solid scoring opportunity in the 22
nd minute but
Peyton Hoyt made a diving save as a centerback to preserve the one-goal deficit. The Lutes held the lead until the 34
th minute when
Jack Bryan scored on a double-assist from
Nick Villanueva and
Alex Bethke. Villanueva played in the ball from the outside before Bethke one-touched a pass to Bryan for the score.
The Lutes pressed early in the second half but
Dalton Lloyd made a diving save early to keep the tie. Pacific Lutheran took advantage back in the 62
nd minute, finding the back of the net off a Trevor Thompson shot. The Lutes scored one more goal on a corner kick in the 76
th minute to take a two-goal advantage but UMHB responded with another
Jack Bryan goal at 79:01 to cut the deficit.
Pacific Lutheran scored again in the 84
h minute when Cris Lozano scored on a Craig Johnson pass for a 4-2 lead. The Lutes held on from there, sealing the 4-2 win.
The Cru totaled 16 shots led by
Jack Bryan and
Karsen Macias with four each. UMHB put eight shots on frame in the contest.
Dalton Lloyd spent the full 90 minutes in goal, recording 11 total saves.
UMHB finished the season with a 13-3-2 record. The Cru won the program's third American Southwest Conference championship and made the program's fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.
