BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team overcame an early 4-0 deficit to take home the walk-off win, 6-5, over Hardin-Simmons in the season home opener Friday night in Belton. The exciting game opened up conference play for both the Cru and Hardin-Simmons. UMHB now moves to 1-0 on the season and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play as HSU falls to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in ASC play.
Hardin-Simmons opened up the top of the first inning with back-to back homeruns. The Cowboys added on to their lead with another homerun to give them a 4-0 lead in the third inning. UMHB cut into the lead with
Blake Harmon's RBI groundout in the fourth inning to make it 4-1. In the next inning,
Caimyn Holiday hit a one-out double and stole third just before
Malek Bolin hit him in with an RBI double. Following two hit-by-pitches in the same inning,
Ryan Farmer scored Bolin on an RBI groundout to cut the Cowboy lead to one. A two-out rally in the sixth inning would allow the Cru to tie the game 4-4 on an RBI double by transfer catcher,
Warren Sammons. Another two-out rally in the eighth inning would give UMHB the lead 5-4, after Holiday doubled home
Drake Herrera. In the top of the ninth inning, the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys would knot it back up after a leadoff triple and score from a sacrifice fly. UMHB was able to get their first two runners on in the bottom of the ninth and just took a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to load the bases for freshman second basemen,
Carson Hagan. In just his second collegiate at-bat, Hagan was able to hit the walk-off sacrifice fly to give the Cru the 6-5 win.
UMHB started freshman,
James McGlumphy, making his collegiate debut on the mound today. McGlumphy pitched five innings giving up six hits and striking out seven.
Trevor Ripke would be the final pitcher for UMHB, coming in during the sixth inning. He gave up just one run and one hit while striking out six. Ripke would earn the win and move to 1-0 on the season. Holiday and Bolin each led the Cru with two hits. Sammons, Jones, and Farmer all added a hit as well. Caidon Livingston takes the loss for the Cowboys after giving up one run and one hit of relief work in the ninth. Frazier led the charge for the Cowboys going 2-2 with two walks, two homeruns, and 3 RBIs.
The two teams will faceoff and closeout the series Saturday, February 12th with a double-header starting at 12pm in Belton.
