KINGSVILLE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor beach volleyball team made history Friday, opening the inaugural 2022 season with a 3-2 win.
UMHB opened the season with a 3-2 win over Missouri Baptist University Friday in Kingsville.
Gracie Nichols and Ella Brunson earned the Cru's first win in the No. 2 line before
Aliana Rojas and
Kaylie Vasil evened the contest with a win in the fourth slot.
Avery Mercer and
Olivia Sherbert gave the Cru the program's inaugural win with a three-set victory in the five spot.
"Today the weather was brutal, but it was good to be able to play," Head Coach
Mark Pryor said. "To be able to compete and play well for the first day of competition for a program is really nice."
The Cru followed that with a loss to tournament-host Texas A&M Kingsville.
"For us to get the program's first win today is definitely nice," Pryor added. "We lost to Texas A&M Kingsville… I actually thought we played better against them, so it was nice to see progression. We know the beginning of season is very challenging with a lot of Division I and Division II programs, but I am really encouraged to see where we are from a starting standpoint."
UMHB finished the day at 1-1 overall and returns to action in a pair of matches tomorrow in Kingsville.
