Baseball falls in series opener against No.7 UT-Dallas

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dropped game one of the series, 6-0, to seventh ranked UT-Dallas. The loss for the Cru drops them to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in American Southwest Conference play. The victory for the Comets improves their record to 16-2 overall and 9-1 in the ASC.
 
After a three-up, three-down first inning by both teams, UTD was able to start their scoring on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Cheek in the second inning, followed by a two-run homer by the catcher Deylan Moreno. The Comets extended their lead in the next inning as A.J. Liu hit an RBI single, making it a 4-0 advantage. Both teams were able to scratch a few hits, but the score remained the same until the top of the ninth frame. UT-Dallas was able to grab some insurance runs on a two RBI double by Zac Vorst making it a 6-0 ballgame. The Crusaders tacked on six hits in the contest but remained scoreless Caimyn Holiday had two hits as four others each had one of their own.
 
James McGlumphy made the start on the mound for UMHB and would surrender the loss (2-2). McGlumphy went five innings giving up four runs on seven hits. Trevor Ripke came in relief and threw three scoreless innings only giving up three hits in the outing. Cameron Bogan came in for the final inning but gave up two runs on two hits and recorded just one out. Isaac Brann finished the inning without giving up a run or a hit. Dylan Hugley started on the mound for the Comets and earned the win (2-0) as he threw six shutout innings giving up five hits. Jake Jennings, Brett Huff, and Kenny Garza each threw an inning of relief for UTD and only surrendered one hit without giving up any runs. Ramon Garza led the way for the Comet offense as he had three hits in the contest.
 
The series continues tomorrow with a double header starting at 12 P.M. at Red Murff Field in Belton.
