BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a doubleheader with Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday afternoon in Belton. The Cru moved to a 13-4 record while CWRU moved to 2-2 on the season.
Case Western Reserve opened the game with a one-run first inning. UMHB evened the contest in the bottom of that frame on an RBI double from
Tatum Stover. The Spartans scored two more off an RBI single from Kela Jagoda to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second. Harris responded again for the Cru, opening the third with a triple and scoring off a sacrifice bunt from
Blakely Niles. The rest of the contest played scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when UMHB claimed the win with a pair of runs.
Lindsey Polleschultz scored on a wild pitch before Harris singled to score
Bailey Eggleston for the 4-3 UMHB win.
Harris led the Cru with three hits while four other Crusaders each added one. Harris also led UMHB with two runs while three Crusaders combined for RBI.
Rachel Williams earned the win in the circle for the Cru, throwing 5.1 shutout innings with one hit allowed. UMHB totaled four runs on seven hits with one error while the Spartans had three runs on six hits.
UMHB took an early lead in the second game when Harris scored on an error. Kaila Nutter scored the equalizer for CWRU in the top of the third. The Cru reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Niles to score Harris followed by an RBI double by
Elisabeth Paul to bring
Kennedy Kalka home. The Spartans knotted-up the contest in the top of the fourth with a two RBI double by Nutter. CWRU continued scoring in the top of the seventh with an RBI double by Rieger to score Gross followed by an RBI single by Thomas to give the Spartans the 5-3 victory.
The Cru totaled six hits with six players claiming one.
Bayleigh Grogan took the loss (5-2) for UMHB pitching three innings. UMHB totaled three runs on six hits while the Spartans totaled five runs on nine hits with one error.
UMHB returns to action on Wednesday, March 16
th in a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Texas Lutheran University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
