Baseball edges No. 25 Texas Lutheran in walk-off fashion

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team was able to pull out an exciting 6-5 walk-off victory over 25th ranked Texas Lutheran Tuesday night in Belton. The win brings the Cru to 19-15 overall and drops TLU to 25-8 on the year.

UMHB opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first frame with back-to-back home runs by Robert McCall and Malek Bolin to give them the early 3-0 advantage. TLU came up in the second inning and claimed a run on an RBI groundout by Tyler Post to make the score 3-1. The Bulldogs came back up in the next inning and scored another run on an Alec Sanchez RBI single to cut the deficit in half. Later that inning, Joe Jiminez hit an RBI sacrifice flyout to tie the game at three apiece. UMHB retook the lead on another Bolin home run in the bottom of the third, making it 4-3. In the fifth inning, Payton Dahl stole third base and advanced home to score on an error, tying the game at four. Later that inning, Holden Phillipus scored on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs the 5-4 lead. Again, UMHB was not allowing the Bulldogs to hold a lead as Caimyn Holiday sent one over the left field wall to make it 5-5 in the fifth inning. The contest remained scoreless until the top of the ninth, when TLU was threatening with runners on first and second with nobody out. UMHB was able to escape the jam with an incredible, rare triple play to keep the score tied heading into the bottom half. Holiday led off the ninth with a walk and stole second and third to put him in scoring position. McCall came up and hit a sacrifice fly out to score Holiday and give UMHB the 6-5 win.

Zach Carroll got the start on the mound for the Cru and went three innings giving up three runs on three hits. Isaac Brann came in relief and threw two innings giving up two runs on just one hit. Cameron Bogan relieved Brann and threw three innings of shutout baseball while only allowing one hit. Zack Honey came in in the ninth inning and forced the triple play on just four pitches to get the Cru out of the jam. Honey earned the win (2-2). Riley Backs started on the mound for TLU and threw one inning allowing three runs on two hits before being relieved by Isai Campos. Campos threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits. Matthew Hickey was the next pitcher in line for the Bulldogs and threw a shutout inning before Diego Vinton came in relief. Vinton gave up one run on one hit in his single inning of work. Blake Cappadonna was the final pitcher for TLU and suffered the loss (0-1). Cappadonna threw 3.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits and struck out six batters. Malek Bolin led the way for the Crusaders with two hits and three RBI.
