BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Howard Payne University in a doubleheader Friday afternoon in Brownwood. The Cru improved to 30-9 on the season and 23-6 in league play while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-33 overall and 2-27 in ASC play.
The first contest remained scoreless through the first six innings. UMHB claimed the winning run in the top of the seventh inning when
Elissa Elliott scored on an RBI single to left field from
Bailey Stoker.
Lindsey Polleschultz,
Allyse Castillo and Stoker each claimed a run for the Cru.
Bayleigh Grogan pitched all seven innings in the circle for UMHB, allowing only two hits. Buckley pitched a complete game for the Yellow Jackets allowing one run on three hits.
UMHB got to an early start in game two when Stoker brought
Lexi Harris home in the top of the first inning. In the top of the fourth inning the Cru extended their lead with a run from Elliott followed by a walked-in run by
Kennedy Kalka. The scoring continued in the same inning with an RBI single to bring
Jessica Miller home to take a 4-0 lead. Three batters later, Stoker hit a single up the middle to score
Tyeann Johnson followed by a single from
Bailey Eggleston to score Stoker and
Milly Cesare. UMHB finished the inning, tacking on two more runs to go up 10-0. The Cru held the Yellow Jackets through the bottom of the fifth to take the run-rule victory. UMHB totaled 10 runs on 10 hits with four players each claiming two hits. The Yellow Jackets had no runs on two hits.
Rachel Williams pitched the complete game for the Cru allowing two hits with one strike out.
The Cru will continue in action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. to close the three-game series in Brownwood.
